Karen Marie Mitchell
I qualified from art college in Yorkshire with a HND in Surface Pattern/Printed Textile Design, in 1994. I went on to produce wedding stationery and greetings cards whilst retraining as a relationship counsellor and family therapist with RELATE. Whilst studying for my PGCE to teach Art & Design, and Counselling skills courses in the Adult & Community sector, I ran Creative Expressions Art Therapy classes with MIND.
We relocated to East Devon in 2008. I am now a painter/printmaker fulltime, from home.
Although I do sketch en plein air and from photographs I prefer to capture the essence of an experience, my interpretation, from memory. I particularly enjoy colour, shape and simplifying a subject. I identify with Picasso’s frustration “…it takes a lifetime to paint like a child.” My paintings often combine ink, watercolour and acrylic. My printmaking includes Monotype, Linocut, Collagraph and Drypoint etchings. I am presently experimenting with an idea to combine printmaking sections within my paintings.
